1. Privacy by Design

Unpeel is designed to work completely offline.

Images, image contents, filenames, generated masks, and resulting cutouts are processed locally on your Mac. They are not uploaded to us or transmitted to our servers.

We do not operate a backend server for Unpeel and do not receive or have access to the images you process in the application.

2. Local Image Processing

When you select, drag, or otherwise provide one or more images to Unpeel, the application processes them directly on your device. This processing may include:

  • accessing the images selected by you;
  • decoding supported image formats;
  • analysing image contents locally to identify the foreground subject;
  • generating and refining a segmentation mask;
  • creating a transparent PNG cutout;
  • allowing you to erase or restore parts of the mask;
  • displaying recent results during the current app session; and
  • copying, saving, dragging, or returning the result through a Shortcut at your request.

Supported inputs currently include JPG, PNG, HEIC, and HEIF images. Selected source images are loaded into the application's memory for processing. Unpeel does not automatically create a persistent cloud or server-side copy of them.

3. BiRefNet_lite and Core ML

Unpeel uses a locally executed version of the BiRefNet_lite image-segmentation model. The model has been converted to Apple's Core ML format and is bundled with the application.

The model runs locally on your Mac using its CPU and GPU. Your images, masks, and cutouts are not sent to the BiRefNet authors, Hugging Face, Apple, or any other model provider through Unpeel.

The use of BiRefNet_lite does not mean that its authors or hosting platforms receive or process your images. The model is third-party software distributed under the MIT License. Its inclusion is documented in the notices accompanying Unpeel.

4. Temporary Files, History, and Exports

To support previewing, copying, dragging, batch processing, and recent-result history, Unpeel writes generated PNG cutouts to a local temporary directory managed by macOS.

These temporary result files:

  • remain on your Mac;
  • are not uploaded by Unpeel;
  • may remain available while the application is running;
  • may be removed when an older history item is discarded; and
  • are cleared by Unpeel when the application is launched again.

macOS may also manage temporary files according to its own storage policies.

Files that you explicitly save or export remain at the location selected by you until you move or delete them. Clipboard content remains subject to macOS and the behaviour of other applications into which you paste it.

Because this content remains under your control on your device, we cannot access, recover, correct, or delete it for you.

5. Settings and Launch at Login

If you enable "Launch at Login," the setting is registered locally using Apple's macOS Service Management system. Unpeel does not transmit this preference to us.

Other application state, such as the current processing session and recent-result history, is maintained locally. Unpeel does not create an online user profile from these settings or activities.

6. No Account, Tracking, or Advertising

Unpeel does not require you to create a user account.

Through the application, we do not collect registration information, passwords, user profiles, usage histories, or cloud-stored images.

Unpeel does not contain:

  • advertising;
  • third-party advertising trackers;
  • behavioural or cross-app tracking;
  • user profiling;
  • custom analytics services;
  • crash-reporting SDKs operated by us; or
  • marketing SDKs.

We do not use your images or cutouts for advertising, analytics, artificial-intelligence training, or profiling.

7. Distribution Through Apple

Unpeel is distributed through Apple's Mac App Store.

Apple may independently process information relating to your App Store account, purchase, download, device, payment, diagnostics, or use of the App Store. This processing is controlled by Apple and is governed by Apple's own privacy policies and contractual terms.

We generally do not receive your payment-card or other payment information from Apple. Apple may provide developers with sales, download, performance, or diagnostic information. Where such information is aggregated or does not identify an individual user, it is not personal data in relation to us.

Depending on your macOS and App Store privacy settings, Apple may collect and process crash or diagnostic information. You can manage the sharing of analytics and diagnostics in your Apple device settings.

8. External Links

Unpeel may contain a link to the provider's website. If you choose to open that link, your default browser connects to the website. The website's own privacy policy applies to that visit.

Unpeel itself does not send the image being processed, the generated cutout, or your editing activity when you open an external link.

9. Contact and Support Requests

When you contact us by email, we process the information contained in your message, including your email address and any information or attachments you choose to provide, to respond to your request.

Depending on the nature of your request, the legal basis is:

  • Article 6(1)(b) GDPR, where the communication is necessary to perform a contract or take steps before entering into a contract; or
  • Article 6(1)(f) GDPR, based on our legitimate interest in answering questions, providing support, preventing misuse, and handling feedback.

We retain support correspondence only for as long as necessary to handle the request and comply with applicable legal obligations. Email communication may involve processing by the email and hosting providers used to deliver and store messages.

Please do not send confidential images unless they are necessary for your support request. If you voluntarily attach an image, it is processed as part of the support communication rather than by Unpeel's offline processing workflow.

10. Legal Obligations and Claims

We may process limited personal data where necessary to:

  • comply with legal obligations;
  • establish, exercise, or defend legal claims;
  • respond to lawful requests from authorities; or
  • document business transactions and support cases.

The applicable legal bases may include Article 6(1)(c) and Article 6(1)(f) GDPR.

11. Recipients and International Transfers

We do not sell, rent, or trade personal data. We do not share images processed locally in Unpeel because we do not receive them.

Personal data submitted through support communications may be processed by service providers that assist us with email, hosting, or technical infrastructure. Such providers may process data only to the extent necessary to provide their services and subject to applicable data-protection requirements.

The application itself does not transfer your images or cutouts internationally. Apple and providers used for email or website hosting may process data outside the European Economic Area. Where required, such transfers are subject to an adequacy decision or other appropriate safeguards under applicable data-protection law. Please refer to the privacy information of the respective provider for further details.

12. Retention

Because Unpeel does not transmit your source images, masks, or cutouts to us, we do not set a server-side retention period for this content.

Temporary cutout files and in-app history remain local and are handled as described in Section 4. Files saved by you remain under your control.

Personal data received through support emails is deleted when it is no longer required for the relevant purpose, unless statutory retention obligations or the establishment, exercise, or defence of legal claims require longer storage.

13. Your Rights

Under the GDPR, you may have the right to:

  • request access to your personal data;
  • request correction of inaccurate data;
  • request deletion of your personal data;
  • request restriction of processing;
  • object to processing based on legitimate interests;
  • receive data you provided in a portable format where applicable; and
  • withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent.

Because we do not receive the images or cutouts processed within Unpeel, we cannot access, retrieve, correct, or delete that locally stored content for you.

To exercise your rights regarding personal data held by us, contact info@maxantonschneider.com.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a competent data-protection supervisory authority, in particular in the EU Member State of your habitual residence, place of work, or the place of the alleged infringement.

14. Device Security

Unpeel is designed to minimise privacy risks by processing images locally. You remain responsible for protecting access to your Mac, source images, temporary files, exports, clipboard, backups, and connected storage locations.

We recommend using appropriate device security, disk encryption, access controls, and secure backups, particularly when processing confidential or sensitive images.

15. Children

Unpeel is not specifically directed at children. The application does not knowingly collect personal data directly from children through an account or online service.

Parents and legal guardians are responsible for supervising use by minors and ensuring that images are processed lawfully.

16. Lawful Use of Images

You are responsible for ensuring that you have the necessary rights, permissions, and legal basis to access, process, edit, and export an image.

Unpeel does not determine whether a person depicted in an image has consented to the image being taken, edited, or distributed.

17. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy if the application, its technical operation, our service providers, or applicable legal requirements change.

The current version will be made available through the application, the App Store listing, or the associated website. The date at the top indicates the latest revision.
