1. Scope and App Store Terms
These Terms apply to the use of Unpeel.
Unpeel is distributed through Apple's Mac App Store. Your acquisition, download, payment, refund, and use of the Mac App Store are also governed by Apple's applicable terms and the applicable App Store end-user licence agreement.
Unless a Custom EULA is provided through App Store Connect, Apple's Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement applies. These Terms supplement the applicable Apple terms. Where Apple's mandatory terms or mandatory consumer-protection law takes precedence, those provisions remain unaffected.
The provider and licensor of Unpeel is Max Anton Schneider. Apple is not the developer or operator of Unpeel.
2. Function of the Application
Unpeel is a menu-bar macOS application that removes backgrounds from compatible images and creates transparent PNG cutouts.
Core functionality may include:
- importing one or more supported images;
- identifying a foreground subject using a locally executed AI model;
- generating a transparent cutout;
- processing multiple images in a batch;
- manually refining the result with Erase and Restore brushes;
- maintaining a temporary recent-result history;
- copying, dragging, or saving a cutout; and
- processing images through Shortcuts or a user-configured Finder Quick Action.
The precise functionality, system requirements, supported formats, and availability of individual features are described in the current App Store listing and the version of the application installed by you.
3. System Requirements
Unpeel requires a compatible Mac running a supported version of macOS, sufficient memory and storage, and the technical resources required to process images locally.
The current version is intended for macOS 14 or later. The user is responsible for checking the system requirements displayed in the App Store before acquiring or installing the application.
Processing speed, memory use, and output quality may depend on factors including:
- the Mac model and available CPU/GPU resources;
- available memory and storage;
- image dimensions, format, and file size;
- subject size and contrast;
- lighting, shadows, reflections, transparency, and motion blur;
- hair, fur, fine structures, and partially obscured objects; and
- other applications running on the device.
4. Licence
Subject to payment of the applicable purchase price, compliance with these Terms, and Apple's applicable licence terms, you receive a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, and revocable right to install and use Unpeel on compatible Apple-branded devices that you own or control, as permitted by Apple's Usage Rules, including applicable Family Sharing or volume-purchase rules.
The application is licensed, not sold.
Except where expressly permitted by mandatory law, an applicable open-source licence, or Apple's terms, you may not:
- reproduce or distribute the application;
- rent, lease, sublicense, sell, or commercially redistribute the application itself;
- circumvent technical protection mechanisms;
- unlawfully extract or copy the application or bundled model to develop a competing product;
- reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the application; or
- remove copyright, trademark, licence, or attribution notices.
5. Your Images and Cutouts
We do not claim ownership of images you import or cutouts generated from them.
You may use exported cutouts, including for commercial purposes, to the extent that you hold all rights and permissions required for the source image, depicted persons, trademarks, designs, and intended use.
Background removal does not create or transfer rights in the source material. You remain solely responsible for determining whether your use of an image or cutout is lawful.
6. Purchases and Pricing
Purchases are processed through Apple's Mac App Store.
The price displayed by Apple at the time of acquisition applies. Apple is responsible for payment processing and may apply taxes, currency conversions, regional pricing, or other App Store conditions.
Unless expressly stated otherwise in the current App Store listing, Unpeel is offered as a one-time purchase and does not require a recurring subscription or in-app purchase.
Invoices, payment confirmations, billing questions, and App Store payment issues are generally handled through Apple. Statutory consumer rights remain unaffected.
7. Withdrawal, Refunds, and Consumer Rights
Where Unpeel is acquired through the Mac App Store, cancellation and refund requests must generally be submitted through Apple and are handled in accordance with Apple's applicable rules and mandatory consumer-protection law.
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits a statutory right of withdrawal, refund, repair, replacement, price reduction, termination, update, or damages where such a right applies.
8. Updates and Compatibility
We may provide updates to:
- fix errors;
- improve cutout quality or performance;
- address security issues;
- maintain compatibility with macOS or Apple technologies;
- modify the local AI model or image-processing pipeline; or
- add, change, or remove functionality where legally permitted.
Updates may require a newer version of macOS or compatible hardware.
Mandatory statutory obligations concerning updates for digital products, including required security updates, remain unaffected. We do not guarantee indefinite compatibility with operating-system versions, hardware, image formats, or Apple technologies that are no longer supported by their providers.
9. Automated Background Removal
Background removal is an automated image-segmentation process and is not error-free.
Unpeel does not guarantee that a cutout will be complete, pixel-perfect, free from halos, or suitable for a particular purpose. The model may remove parts of a subject, retain parts of a background, or produce imperfect edges.
Errors may occur due to, among other things:
- low resolution or compression artefacts;
- poor contrast between subject and background;
- transparent, reflective, or translucent objects;
- fine hair, fur, mesh, smoke, shadows, or motion blur;
- multiple overlapping subjects;
- unusual perspectives or lighting; or
- unsupported, damaged, or unusually large files.
You must review and, where necessary, refine the result before relying on or publishing it.
10. Local Processing and Data Responsibility
Unpeel is designed to process selected images locally on your Mac. Further details are provided in the Privacy Policy.
You are responsible for:
- securely storing source images and cutouts;
- maintaining appropriate backups;
- protecting access to your Mac;
- reviewing clipboard content before sharing it;
- protecting confidential or sensitive images;
- selecting the correct destination before exporting; and
- deleting files that are no longer required.
We cannot recover images, temporary results, clipboard content, or application data that are lost, overwritten, corrupted, or deleted on your device.
11. Lawful and Acceptable Use
You may use Unpeel only with content that you are legally permitted to access and process.
You are solely responsible for compliance with applicable laws and third-party rights, including:
- privacy and data-protection law;
- personality and publicity rights;
- copyright, trademark, design, and related rights;
- confidentiality obligations;
- employment and workplace rules; and
- contractual restrictions.
You may not use Unpeel:
- for unlawful purposes;
- to infringe intellectual-property or personality rights;
- to process or distribute images obtained without required authorisation;
- to create or distribute unlawful content;
- to misrepresent a cutout as authentic where doing so would be unlawful or deceptive;
- to interfere with the application's operation or security; or
- in a manner that violates Apple's applicable terms.
12. Third-Party and Open-Source Components
Unpeel includes or uses third-party and open-source components, including the BiRefNet_lite image-segmentation model developed by ZhengPeng and converted to Core ML for local execution.
BiRefNet_lite is distributed under the MIT License. Relevant licence texts and notices are provided in the documentation accompanying Unpeel.
The BiRefNet authors, Hugging Face, and Apple do not operate, sponsor, endorse, or provide Unpeel merely because their software, hosting platform, frameworks, or technologies are referenced or used. The application does not send image content to the model authors or hosting platform.
Third-party names and trademarks remain the property of their respective owners.
13. Availability and Technical Limitations
We aim to provide a functional and reliable application but cannot guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation in every hardware, operating-system, image, and workflow configuration.
Temporary or permanent limitations may result from:
- software errors;
- operating-system updates;
- hardware or memory limitations;
- unsupported or corrupted files;
- third-party or open-source components; or
- changes made by Apple.
Mandatory rights relating to the conformity of digital products remain unaffected.
14. Statutory Warranty Rights
Consumers are entitled to the mandatory statutory warranty rights applicable to digital products. Nothing in these Terms limits those rights.
Any description of Unpeel in the App Store, mandatory pre-contractual information, and expressly agreed product characteristics remain relevant when assessing conformity under applicable law.
15. Liability
We are liable without limitation:
- in cases of intent or gross negligence;
- for injury to life, body, or health;
- under applicable product-liability law;
- where a guarantee has expressly been given; and
- in other cases where liability cannot legally be excluded or limited.
In cases of slight negligence, we are liable only for the breach of an essential contractual obligation whose fulfilment is necessary for proper performance of the contract and on which the user may ordinarily rely. In such cases, liability is limited to the foreseeable damage typical for this type of contract.
The above limitations also apply to our legal representatives and agents. Mandatory consumer rights and liability provisions remain unaffected.
16. No Professional Assessment
Unpeel is a technical image-editing tool. A generated cutout does not constitute verification of authenticity, identity, ownership, consent, suitability for official documents, or compliance with professional or platform-specific image requirements.
You remain responsible for reviewing the result and determining whether it is suitable for your intended purpose.
17. Termination
You may stop using and uninstall Unpeel at any time.
Your licence may end if you materially violate these Terms or the applicable App Store licence conditions, subject to applicable law.
Provisions that by their nature should continue to apply after termination, including intellectual-property, liability, and governing-law provisions, remain applicable.
18. Apple-Specific Terms
You acknowledge that these Terms are concluded between you and the application provider, not Apple.
To the extent required by Apple's applicable terms:
- the application provider, rather than Apple, is responsible for Unpeel and its content;
- Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support services for Unpeel;
- the application provider is responsible for addressing product claims, except where applicable law provides otherwise;
- Apple is not responsible for third-party intellectual-property claims relating to Unpeel, except where applicable law provides otherwise;
- you must comply with applicable third-party terms when using Unpeel;
- Apple and its subsidiaries may be third-party beneficiaries of the applicable licence terms; and
- Apple may enforce applicable licence provisions against you.
These provisions do not limit any rights you may have directly against Apple under Apple's own terms or applicable law.
19. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms where reasonably necessary, for example because of:
- changes to Unpeel;
- legal or regulatory requirements;
- security considerations;
- changes to Apple's platform; or
- clarification of existing provisions.
Changes will not retroactively remove rights already acquired by consumers. Where required, users will be informed of material changes in an appropriate manner.
20. Governing Law
The laws of the Federal Republic of Germany apply, excluding the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods.
For consumers, this choice of law does not deprive them of mandatory protections provided by the law of the country in which they have their habitual residence. Mandatory rules regarding jurisdiction remain unaffected.
21. Consumer Dispute Resolution
We are neither willing nor obliged to participate in dispute-resolution proceedings before a consumer arbitration board, unless a legal obligation to participate applies.
22. Severability
If any provision of these Terms is or becomes invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain unaffected. The applicable statutory provision shall take the place of the invalid or unenforceable provision.
